Fernando Rodney took his fourth blown save in giving up a Jose Bautista solo homer Wednesday against the Jays.

That alone would hardly be grounds for termination. Rays manager Joe Maddon, though, showed zero confidence in Rodney when he pulled him in favor of Joel Peralta after Adam Lind's one-out walk. If Rodney loses his job over this one, it'd most likely be a short-term move; he's get every opportunity to win it right back if he shows better command. Peralta would be in line for saves in his place.

Bryce Harper homered in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run in the 10th as the Nationals beat the Giants 2-1 on Wednesday.

The Harper kid is pretty good when he's not laying down sac bunts. Ian Desmond gave the Nationals the lead in the 10th, singling after Harper doubled and Ryan Zimmerman was intentionally walked. Harper moved into a tie for second in the NL with 12 homers, putting him two behind major league leader Justin Upton.

Gio Gonzalez pitched 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.

The obvious call was to pull Gonzalez after 107 pitches and seven scoreless innings today, but manager Davey Johnson was hoping for more. A one-out walk got Gonzalez pulled in the eighth, and the baserunner came around to score off Drew Storen, tying the game at 1. Gonzalez has allowed just three earned runs over 21 innings in his last three starts, but he has no victories to show for it.

Rafael Soriano bounced back from Tuesday's blown save to pitch a scoreless inning for his 13th save Wednesday against the Giants.

Soriano's four-year old caught Marco Scutaro's fly to deep left to end the game. It was Soriano's first save since May 9. He had a loss and two blown saves since.

Logan Forsythe (foot) will begin playing in extended spring training games on Friday.

Forsythe has been taking batting practice for a week with no issues and is ready to take the next step. He's been out all season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, so he'll need plenty of rehab at-bats before returning.

Marco Scutaro went 0-for-3 with two walks Wednesday against the Nationals, snapping his 19-game hitting streak.

That's fine: Scutaro has now reached base safely twice in 14 games in a row, which is more impressive anyway.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson on Friday.

The Padres want Maybin to get around 30 rehab at-bats, so he should return sometime next week. The outfielder has been sidelined since mid-April with a nagging right wrist ailment.
