Gomes is expected to miss 6-8 weeks following the discovery of a "moderate MCL sprain."

Gomes was originally diagnosed with a knee sprain, but an MRI on Sunday morning revealed a more serious ailment was in play. Roberto Perez, who is starting in Gomes' stead Sunday, should see a heavy increase in reps over the next month and a half. Carlos Santana could also see reps behind the plate in an emergency situation, though the team will likely prefer to avoid this route. The organization may not be ready to turn to 19-year-old prospect Francisco Mejia just yet, so it wouldn't be surprising to see them look to the Triple-A level to add depth at the position.

Gomes (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Gomes exited Saturday's game after Rajai Davis slid into him at home plate, and it now appears he'll miss extended time because of that injury. The Indians will likely turn to Roberto Perez behind the plate for the most part, while Carlos Santana has also volunteered to catch if needed. The club didn't recall a catcher Sunday in a corresponding transaction, so the Santana scenario is entirely possible.

Manager Terry Francona said the early diagnosis on Gomes' injury is a knee sprain, but he will undergo an MRI early Sunday morning, Fox Sports Ohio's Joe Reedy reports.

He left Saturday's game after Rajai Davis slid into his extended leg at home plate, and he needed assistance to leave the field. It sounds like Gomes could be headed for a DL stint, as a knee injury for a catcher can be quite problematic. Roberto Perez would be the immediate replacement option, and if a trip to the DL is indeed called for, the Indians may be forced to call up Brett Hayes or Adam Moore from Triple-A. Carlos Santana also offered up his services after the game, so that's another route the Indians could go. Either way, it sounds like owners will be without Gomes for at least a few weeks.

Gomes went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in Monday's opener against the Astros.

Gomes figures to see the bulk of the starts behind the plate this year and should provide a solid power option among catchers. In his first season of full-time starting duty, the 27-year-old hit 21 homers with 74 RBI last season, and will look to improve in those areas in 2015.

Gomes hit his second homer of the spring Friday.

Gomes should see plenty of action as Cleveland's starting catcher with Carlos Santana's days behind the plate over and provides plenty of power upside from the catcher spot in most formats.
