Davis' $7 million option for 2015 was exercised by the Royals on Monday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.

Davis' option was expected to be picked up following a remarkable season in 2014 that included the 28-year-old as an anchor in the back end of a bullpen that helped get the Royals to the World Series. He entered the season as a candidate for the starting rotation, but now will enter 2015 cemented in the bullpen with two more options left on his contract in 2016 and 2017.

Davis allowed an earned run for the first time since June 25 Tuesday night against the White Sox.

Davis had been holding one of the longest active scoreless inning streaks in the majors up until Tuesday, second to only teammate Kelvin Herrera. Despite playing a role in a tough Royals' loss, Davis has been one of the elite relief pitchers in baseball this season, striking out 97 batters over 66 innings with a nearly untouchable 0.83 WHIP.

Davis earned the win Monday, tossing a scoreless ninth against the White Sox.

Davis has been sensational this season, registering a 0.69 ERA and nine wins out of the bullpen. The righty has allowed runs in just four appearances this season, and has been unscored upon since June 25.

Davis struck out a pair during a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season.

All three saves that Davis has recorded this season have come within the last week. Greg Holland has been dealing with a triceps injury, but it's believed that Holland is nearing a return to action, and subsequently, he'll move Davis back into a setup role. Davis could become a free agent if the Royals decline their $7 million club option on his contract this offseason. As a result, there could be significant interest in Davis as a closer from teams looking to bolster their ninth-inning situation.

Davis retired the two hitters he faced, both via strikeout, to preserve a 1-0 Kansas City win over the Yankees on Friday night.

The Royals' bullpen has been worked hard of late and Davis (one save, 0.72 ERA), who has been spectacular in a set-up role all season was given a chance to log his first save of the year. He'll primarily remain the set-up man for Greg Holland, but he is a viable option when Holland needs a breather.

Davis pitched a scoreless ninth inning and claimed his seventh win of the season Tuesday vs. the Twins after teammate Alex Gordon smacked a walk-off homer in the bottom half of the frame.

With an 0.78 ERA and 13.5 K/9 rate over 57.1 innings, Davis has arguably been the best reliever in baseball -- closer or not. Perhaps most incredibly, he's given up just two extra-base hits in this season, both of which were doubles.

Wade Davis picked up his third win in relief with a perfect eighth Wednesday as the Royals beat the White Sox 3-1.

Davis got a couple of strikeouts, though it still took him just 10 pitches to finish the inning. He's up to 38 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings for the season, with three wins and a 1.77 ERA Yeah, he'd probably still rather be starting, but he's much, much better in his current role.

Wade Davis was unavailable Wednesday and won't pitch Thursday, either, due to a stiff neck.

"Wade showed up yesterday with a bit of a stiff neck," Royals manager Ned Yost said Thursday. "He's still fighting it a little bit right now. He's going to come out and play a little catch, but Wade was unavailable yesterday." Davis did say Thursday that he was "a little better," so he should be ready sometime this weekend. The setup man has been fantastic this season with a 2.08 ERA and 32/9 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings.

Wade Davis will be the Royals' primary setup man.

Davis was tried out in the rotation again last season before moving back to the bullpen where he belongs. He's an excellent option to pitch in front of Greg Holland in what will be a loaded Kansas City bullpen even after the loss of Luke Hochevar (elbow).
