Burnett was called up by the Nationals on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

Acquired earlier this month via trade, Burnett returns to a Nationals team with whom he spent the 2009-2012 seasons. He has spent time in four different organizations this season alone and hasn't appeared in the majors since 2014, but the Nats seem to value Burnett's experience.

Sean Burnett (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery this week.

It's the second time that he has undergone the procedure. He's looking at another lengthy recovery process and probably won't be an option to rejoin the Angels bullpen until the beginning of the 2016 season.

Sean Burnett was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

That's usually a precursor for Tommy John surgery. If so, it would be the second time Burnett has undergone the surgery in his career. He made just three appearances with the Angels this season.

Angels placed LHP Sean Burnett on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow injury.

Burnett just can't catch a break. The left-hander retired the only batter he faced Tuesday in his third appearance since returning from the DL, but he felt more soreness in his elbow in the process. The pitcher is headed back to Anaheim to be examined Wednesday. Burnett has been limited to 16 appearances over the last two seasons due to elbow issues.

Sean Burnett (elbow) will throw a simulated game in Arizona on Thursday.

Burnett threw a successful bullpen session recently, and he'll now face hitters as he works back from a setback with his surgically repaired left elbow. It's still unclear when he might progress to a rehab assignment, and there's no timetable for his return to the big club.
