Detwiler, a non-roster invitee to spring training who spent time with the A's last season, developed a cutter this offseason, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "It's just another look, all my pitches fade off arm-side so I have something going the other way," Detwiler said. "It puts something in the hitters' heads, they can't necessarily dive out."

EDGE Analysis

After tossing eight scoreless frames in his Oakland debut last Aug. 11, Detwiler struggled the rest of the way, finishing the 2016 campaign with a 6.10 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over 48.2 innings. The 32-year-old decided to add a cutter to his arsenal this offseason at the encouragement of A's coaches Curt Young and Scott Emerson and has had some early success with it in bullpens this spring. Bruce Maxwell, who's caught the veteran in those sessions, has noted the pitch has "got late break to it" and could be key in Detwiler's quest for a roster spot. The veteran southpaw is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut in Saturday's opener against the Cubs following starter Jesse Hahn.

Detwiler agreed to a minor league contract with the A's on Wednesday that includes an invite to spring training, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

The lefty tossed eight scoreless innings his debut with Oakland in August but it was all downhill from there -- Detwiler gave up 30 runs in his next eight appearances (36 innings). While he will return to the organization and get to make his case for a roster spot in spring training, Detwiler will likely open the year as depth in the minors. He's posted 5.5 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 rates in parts of nine major league seasons.

Detwiler (2-4) gave up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over 2.2 innings of relief against the Angels on Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

Yikes. He was already having a bad season, but this was the cherry on top. This may well end up being Detwiler's final appearance of the season, in which case he'll finish with a 6.10 ERA over 48.2 innings split between the A's and Indians.

Detwiler allowed two runs on five hits and three walks across 5.1 innings Sunday versus the Rangers. He struck out one and improved to 2-3 with the win.

EDGE Analysis

Detwiler threw just 55 percent of his pitches for strikes Sunday, but he was able to keep the Texas hitters off balance and only allowed one extra-base hit. He did well to scatter baserunners for the most part and was only scored upon in the third inning as four straight men reached base before Carlos Gomez was thrown out at home to end the inning. Detwiler has been far from impressive this season, as he still owns a 5.09 ERA and has just 26 strikeouts across 46 innings, and he will make his final start of the season Sunday against this same Rangers club.

Detwiler allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over four innings in a no-decision Monday against the Royals.

EDGE Analysis

Detwiler had gone a week since his last appearance because he was needed in relief after a Raul Alcantara went short against the Angels, which may have factored into the decision to removve him after just 81 pitches. Either way, Detwiler wasn't fooling Royals hitters at all, as he failed to strike out a single batter and recorded just one swinging strike. Detwiler has a 5.31 ERA and won't improve as long as making contact is so easy for opposing hitters.

Detwiler will no longer start Tuesday's matchup against the Angels, as the team will instead use him in long relief Monday, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.

EDGE Analysis

Monday's starter, Raul Alcantara, needed 61 pitches to make it through just three frames, surrendering five earned runs in the process. As a result, the A's turned to Detwiler a day early instead of preserving him to make Tuesday's start. The team will likely announce a replacement option following Monday's game.

Detwiler pitch seven great innings, allowing just one run on three hits while walking two and striking out seven in a no-decision Wednesday against Houston.

EDGE Analysis

Making his fifth start of the season, and fourth straight on the road, Detwiler dealt his best game since tossing eight shutout innings in his first start back on Aug. 10. The southpaw allowed a season-low three hits while notching a season-high seven strikeouts Wednesday. Unfortunately for Detwiler and his owners, the A's offense left eight runners on base and couldn't capitalize on a shaky start by Astros' hurler Mike Fiers. Detwiler is in line to make his next start Monday at home against the Angels.

Detwiler allowed three earned runs over 5.1 innings while striking out six.

EDGE Analysis

After allowing a two-run homer in the first inning to Jedd Gyorko, Detwiler settled in and pitched well for the rest of the game. After a fantastic first start with the A's where he allowed zero runs over eight innings, Detwiler has struggled, allowing 14 runs in his last three starts over only 14 innings. Detwiler's outing Friday likely earned himself another start and will next take the hill Wednesday at Houston.

Detwiler (1-2) lasted just four innings, allowing six runs, 10 hits and one walk while striking out two in Saturday's loss to the White Sox.

EDGE Analysis

For the second straight start, Detwiler was hammered for five-plus runs in fewer than five innings. After spinning eight shutout innings on Aug. 10 in his first start for the A's, the southpaw has put up two performances that more likely resemble what can be expected from him. Detwiler is in line to make his next start at St. Louis on Friday, but he's best left on the wire in most formats.

Detwiler (1-1) was rocked for five runs on seven hits and four walks over just 4.2 innings in Monday's loss to the Rangers. He struck out three.

EDGE Analysis

Detwiler came crashing back down to earth after surprisingly throwing eight shutout innings in his season debut as a starter. The 30-year-old's middling performance at the Triple-A level suggests this game's version is closer to his true level. That's a troubling realization with another road tilt coming up next for him Sunday against the White Sox.
