Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Delgado will likely move into a late-innings role, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

EDGE Analysis

Given the recent struggles of Jake Barrett and Enrique Burgos at the back end of the Arizona bullpen, the announcement makes sense. Hale said both Delgado and Daniel Hudson could be used in high-leverage situations going forward. Hudson recorded 20 holds a season ago and has 17 in 2016, so he's probably the safer bet of the two to see save opportunities.

Delgado has given up seven runs over 11.1 innings during July, striking out nine in that time span.

EDGE Analysis

The 26-year-old posted a 1.80 ERA over May and June, but worsened in July with a 5.56 ERA and has yet to record a hold or save this season. On the bright side, he owns just a 0.67 WHIP in his last six innings, spanning seven games.

Delgado allowed his first earned run since May 9 in Tuesday's loss to Houston on a Luis Valbuena home run.

EDGE Analysis

Following the lead-off homer to begin the fifth, Delgado needed just seven pitches to retire the next three batters. After a horrid April, in which the right-hander posted a 6.19 ERA, he compiled a 2.92 ERA in May and now leads the bullpen in total appearances with 25. Delgado seems to have righted the ship but is still a long shot to see any save opportunities.

After allowing two runs in 1.1 innings of work in Sunday's loss to Colorado, Delgado's ERA is up to 6.75.

EDGE Analysis

It's been a rough start to the season for the righty, and a dip in velocity may be to blame for the poor results. The Diamondbacks have not reported any injuries with Delgado, but he will likely remain in a low-leverage role until he starts producing better outings.

The Diamondbacks are not concerned about Delgado's velocity being down so far this season, the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reports. "He tries to manipulate the ball a little more and his velocity will drop," manager Chip Hale said. "That's the only concern there, is that he's probably trying to manipulate the ball too much instead of letting it go."

EDGE Analysis

In a brief outing Thursday against the Dodgers, Delgado threw six pitches, all fastballs, and was unable to top 92 mph. Last season he was routinely touching 95 mph, so this is a noteworthy dip. While, the D-Backs seem to think Delgado is healthy, he has allowed eight runs in 7.1 innings, and is unlikely to see high-leverage looks until he can become more effective.

Delgado has a 8.53 ERA through his first four appearances of the season.

EDGE Analysis

He started the season with 2.2 scoreless innings, but over his last 3.2 innings, he's surrendered six earned runs. This is of course a small sample size, and Delgado is still expected to be an important part of the Arizona bullpen. But he may not see a ton of high-leverage situations if he continues to struggle.

Delgado appeared in eight of Arizona's spring training games and pitched 11.2 innings total.

EDGE Analysis

Delgado struck out 13 while walking just two batters in his 11.2 innings pitched. Delgado was pretty dominant when he was given the ball throughout the exhibition. He will begin the season as one of the top options in the middle of the Diamondback bullpen.

Delgado and the Diamondbacks agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.275 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 25-year-old will return to Arizona in 2016 after posting a 3.25 ERA across 72.0 innings (64 appearances) out of the bullpen last season. Delgado, who's found much more success as a reliever than as a starter, is expected to begin the year as a back-end reliever with the possibility that he could ascend to a closing role should Brad Ziegler falter.

Delgado (8-4) required just one out to earn a victory Wednesday night, picking up the decision in a 3-1 victory over the Rockies.

EDGE Analysis

Delgado induced a groundout from DJ LeMahieu to end the top of the sixth inning, and became the pitcher of record after a Jarrod Saltalamacchia RBI single in the bottom half of the frame. The former starter performed well in his first full season out of the bullpen, posting an impressive 9.00 K/9 and 79.1 percent Strand Rate. Delgado still has upside at 25 years old, making him an interesting closing candidate for the Diamondbacks in 2016.

Delgado picked up the win (7-4) with a scoreless inning Tuesday against Colorado. He struck out two.

EDGE Analysis

Delgado is putting the finishing touches on a solid season out of the bullpen with a 3.26 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 69:32 K:BB ratio in 69 innings. While he certainly walks too many batters, he has provided good strikeout numbers and controlled the long ball well over the past two seasons. His days as a starter are almost certainly over, but he could be an effective back of the bullpen reliever and a candidate to close at some point.
