Gausman is the favorite to start Opening Day with Chris Tillman ruled out, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

With Chris Tillman ruled out for Opening Day with shoulder issues, Gausman has emerged as the frontrunner to takeover the job. The 26-year-old posted a 3.61 ERA with a 174:47 K:BB ratio across 179.2 innings (30 starts) with the Orioles last season.

Gausman and the Orioles agreed Sunday to a one-year, $3.45 million contract to avoid arbitration, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

EDGE Analysis

With Gausman now under contract for 2017, he'll look to potentially make the move from mid-rotation cog to staff ace following an impressive 2016 campaign. The former top prospect was able to avoid the injuries and ever-changing roles that had stagnated his development in previous seasons, submitting a 3.61 ERA and 8.72 K/9 rate while making 30 starts for the big club. A full-on breakout hasn't materialized yet, but the 26-year-old's upside makes him a quality target in fantasy drafts.

Gausman, who is notorious for first-half struggles, began his offseason throwing program earlier than he has in previous years, Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun reports.

EDGE Analysis

Gausman's ERA prior to last season's Midsummer Classic was more than a full run higher than his second-half number. After enduring a frustrating first half, he exploded into the discussion of the league's top young pitchers, posting a 3.10 ERA post All-Star break to end the year with a 3.61 mark. "I've always finished strong. So, for me, now it's kind of figuring out why that is," Gausman said.

Gausman helped the Orioles clinch a playoff spot by holding the Yankees to two runs in 7.1 innings Sunday while earning his ninth win of the season.

EDGE Analysis

Gausman finished the season on a high note after a couple of subpar starts in his last two outings. He had just three strikeouts, but he induced a season high 13 ground balls. Brian McCann connected for a home run, but Gausman's ability to keep the ball on the ground was his strong suit Sunday. Gausman figures to be a part of Baltimore's postseason rotation, though he likely will not pitch in the Wild Card game against the Blue Jays.

Gausman (8-12) pitched six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out five in Tuesday's loss to Toronto.

EDGE Analysis

The first three runs Gausman surrendered Tuesday were the result of a pair of homers. That makes two straight starts, and seven total on the year, in which the righty has served up two-plus longballs. Gausman's 1.28 WHIP is not as great as it first appears when considering the 25-year-old owns a 1.4 HR/9 through 172.1 innings. It's no coincidence that his best stretch of the year (5-0 in six starts from Aug. 18 to Sept. 14) was when he managed a 0.5 HR/9 over 39.2 innings. If Gausman can't keep the ball in the park, his otherwise strong numbers will consistently go to waste.

Gausman (ribs) will make his next start Tuesday against the Blue Jays, Rich Dubroff of CSN Mid Atlantic reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Orioles announced earlier Saturday that Gausman had moved past his intercostal injury, and he's now penciled in to start Tuesday's outing, meaning Chris Tillman will take the hill Wednesday. Gausman has put together a strong campaign, overall, but struggled in his last outing Tuesday against the Red Sox, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs across 6.1 innings.

Gausman (intercostal) said Saturday that he feels fine and ready to make his next start, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Orioles were forced to push Gausman back this week due to an intercostal injury, but he made it through his bullpen session Saturday without discomfort. While he has deemed himself good to go for his next outing, the Orioles have yet to formally announce whether Gausman will start Tuesday or Wednesday.

Gausman's next start will be pushed to Tuesday or Wednesday as he deals with an intercostal issue, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Gausman struggled in his Tuesday outing as he allowed five runs over the course of 6.1 innings. Although the team has yet to give a definite return for Gausman, it seems likely he'll be back on the mound early next week.

Gausman (8-11) allowed five runs on 10 hits over 6.1 innings Tuesday against the Red Sox, striking out five and walking one in a losing effort.

EDGE Analysis

Gausman fared much worse in his second consecutive start against the Red Sox after blanking them over eight innings last Wednesday. He was doing pretty well in this one, too, until a three-run homer by David Ortiz raised Boston's lead from 2-1 to 5-1. The right-hander finally gets to face a different team when the Diamondbacks come to Camden Yards on Sunday.

Gausman (8-10) was magnificent Wednesday, breezing through eight innings and holding the Red Sox to four hits while walking one and striking out six in a 1-0 victory.

EDGE Analysis

Only in the seventh inning did Boston put more than one runner on base against Gausman. The righty didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and tossed a career-high 120 pitches against the red-hot Red Sox to capture his career-high eighth victory of the season. Gausman's five scoreless starts of at least seven innings this year are tied with the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka for most in the AL. He's pitched well enough to win more games, but has received one or fewer runs of support in 10 of his 27 starts this season.
