Zimmermann struck out four without walking a batter in 2.2 innings of work during Wednesday's Grapefruit League action.

He did surrender a run on two hits, but it was still a very effective outing for Zimmermann. With free agency looming next offseason, the Nationals' right-hander has every incentive to repeat or even exceed 2014's career-best numbers.

Zimmermann says he won't negotiate a new contract once the regular season begins, Jamal Collier of reports. The pending free agent seemed destined to hit the open market after the 2015 season once the Nationals spent $210 million on Max Scherzer, but Zimmermann has left the door open for a new contract with Washington this spring. There's always the possibility he gets traded as well, if another club meets GM Mike Rizzo's asking price, but for now Zimmermann remains part of the Nats' extremely loaded rotation.

The Cubs are in talks with the Nationals to acquire Zimmermann, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

It sounds like the talks are in the relatively early stages, but according to the report, there is enough mutual interest that other names have been discussed. To acquire Zimmermann, the Cubs would almost certainly have to include at least one of their touted young middle infielders, likely either Addison Russell, Javier Baez or Arismendy Alcantara, and quite possibly other pieces as well. Zimmermann, 28, is a two-time All-Star who has averaged 200 innings over the past three seasons, but he is entering the final year of his contract and turned down a five-year, $85-million extension prior to the 2014 season.

Zimmermann threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Dan Kolko of reports.

Zimmermann typically throws his bullpen two days before his next outing, so Tuesday's session would seem to line him up to start a potential Game 5 of the NLDS on Thursday. Nothing's set in stone, however, and the Nats may very well go with Stephen Strasburg on five days' rest, if they do indeed manage to extend the series with a win Tuesday.

Zimmermann will start Game 2 of the NLDS against the Giants on Saturday.

Zimmermann will look to follow up his no-hitter in the regular season finale with another gem against San Francisco, and though the Giants have yet to announce their rotation for the series, he figures to start opposite 39-year-old Tim Hudson. Zimmermann posted a 2.18 ERA and .213 BAA after the All-Star break, earning victories in each of his final eight decisions.

Zimmermann pitched a no-hitter in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Nationals. He struck out 10 and allowed only one walk.

Not a bad way to finish off the regular season. Were it not for a dramatic diving catch by Stephen Souza Jr. for the final out, the no-hitter would have been spoiled. Still, Zimmermann dazzled in Sunday's start, throwing 79 of 104 pitches for strikes en route to his first ever no-hitter. The right-hander had another impressive regular season in 2014, going 14-5 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 182:29 K:BB ratio over 199.2 innings. Needless to say, Zimmermann will be an integral part of Washington's postseason rotation.

Zimmermann (shoulder) will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Marlins.

The Nats were thinking about pushing Zimmermann's next start back, after he was drilled in the shoulder by a Casey McGehee line drive last weekend, but Wednesday's rainout made it a no-brainer. Not only does pushing Zimmermann back give him a few extra days to let his bruising diminish, it also lines him up to start Game 2 of the NLDS next Saturday (Oct. 4).

Zimmerman (shoulder) could have his next start pushed back, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.

Zimmerman took a liner off the shoulder in his last start Saturday and is dealing with a fairly severe bruise. With the NL East title sewn up, the Nats may push Zimmerman's next start back one day to ensure he's not dealing with any lingering pain when the postseason begins. If that's the case, Zimmerman could pitch Saturday, rather than throwing one of Friday's two games agains the Marlins.

The Nationals will re-evaluate Zimmermann's pitching shoulder on Sunday after he got hit with a Casey McGahee line drive during Saturday's game, the Washington Post reports. "We're not going to take any chances there," Nats manager Matt Williams said. "I would assume he'll be pretty sore [Sunday]. He's got a pretty good welt on his shoulder."

Zimmermann avoided serious injury, but if the Nationals still have a cushion in the race for the NL's best record they may elect to skip his final regular season start as a precaution.
