Zimmermann took the loss on Saturday, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks over 6.1 innings, striking out three.

He didn't have his best stuff, but the ongoing Ian Desmond Follies on defense behind him doomed any chance Zimmermann might have had of scratching out a win. His 6.14 ERA through three games is ugly, but his fantasy owners should be patient with him, as a turnaround could begin as soon as his next start in Miami.

Zimmermann picked up the win in his first start of the year Wednesday, striking out four while holding the Mets to one run on five hits over six innings of work.

A sharp start to the year for Zimmermann, who's developed into one of the game's better pitchers over the last few year and could take another step forward this season after raising his strikeout rate significantly last year.

Zimmermann struck out four without walking a batter in 2.2 innings of work during Wednesday's Grapefruit League action.

He did surrender a run on two hits, but it was still a very effective outing for Zimmermann. With free agency looming next offseason, the Nationals' right-hander has every incentive to repeat or even exceed 2014's career-best numbers.

Zimmermann says he won't negotiate a new contract once the regular season begins, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports. The pending free agent seemed destined to hit the open market after the 2015 season once the Nationals spent $210 million on Max Scherzer, but Zimmermann has left the door open for a new contract with Washington this spring. There's always the possibility he gets traded as well, if another club meets GM Mike Rizzo's asking price, but for now Zimmermann remains part of the Nats' extremely loaded rotation.

The Cubs are in talks with the Nationals to acquire Zimmermann, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

It sounds like the talks are in the relatively early stages, but according to the report, there is enough mutual interest that other names have been discussed. To acquire Zimmermann, the Cubs would almost certainly have to include at least one of their touted young middle infielders, likely either Addison Russell, Javier Baez or Arismendy Alcantara, and quite possibly other pieces as well. Zimmermann, 28, is a two-time All-Star who has averaged 200 innings over the past three seasons, but he is entering the final year of his contract and turned down a five-year, $85-million extension prior to the 2014 season.

Zimmermann threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Dan Kolko of MASNsports.com reports.

Zimmermann typically throws his bullpen two days before his next outing, so Tuesday's session would seem to line him up to start a potential Game 5 of the NLDS on Thursday. Nothing's set in stone, however, and the Nats may very well go with Stephen Strasburg on five days' rest, if they do indeed manage to extend the series with a win Tuesday.

Zimmermann posted a 2.18 ERA and .213 BAA after the All-Star break, earning victories in each of his final eight decisions.

Zimmermann pitched a no-hitter in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Nationals. He struck out 10 and allowed only one walk.

Not a bad way to finish off the regular season. Were it not for a dramatic diving catch by Stephen Souza Jr. for the final out, the no-hitter would have been spoiled. Still, Zimmermann dazzled in Sunday's start, throwing 79 of 104 pitches for strikes en route to his first ever no-hitter. The right-hander had another impressive regular season in 2014, going 14-5 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 182:29 K:BB ratio over 199.2 innings. Needless to say, Zimmermann will be an integral part of Washington's postseason rotation.
