Joe Wieland SP LAD 2 weeks ago

Wieland has been optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, the LA Times reports.

At one point he was considered the favorite to step in to replace the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu, but because of MLB roster rules that seems less likely now.

Wieland has tossed nine innings of one-run ball and is one option to replaced the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu in the Opening Day rotation, the Dodgers' official site reports.

Wieland also has a 9:3 K:BB and could be ahead of other internal candidates, a list that includes Mike Bolsinger, Carlos Frias, and Zach Lee.

Wieland will be traded to the Dodgers as part of the package for outfielder Matt Kemp, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

Wieland bounced around the Padres' farm system in 2014, and was eventually able to log 11.1 innings at the Major League level. If he sticks with the big league club, the right-hander will compete for a back-end rotation spot, and could also be used in long relief.

Wieland agreed to a one-year, $590,000 contract with the Padres on Saturday, avoiding arbitration, Jerry Crasnick of reports.

Wieland underwent Tommy John surgery in July of 2012 and needed a cleanup procedure on the elbow in March, which kept him off a big-league mound until September. The right-hander struggled in his four appearances last season (7.15 ERA), but the Padres will give Wieland an opportunity to prove himself on a low-cost deal in 2015.

Wieland collected his first win of the season Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five Rockies over 5.1 innings.

Wednesday was Wieland's best outing of the year, which isn't saying much, since he lasted only 2.1 innings in his previous start. The victory also marks the first in Wieland's career as he went 0-4 in 2012 for the Padres.

Wieland was named the starter for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The Padres decided it was in the best interest Tyson Ross (forearm) to shut him down for the season, so Wieland will be called upon to fill the vacancy in the rotation. Wieland has looked a little rusty since returning to the majors in September following a long road back from July 2012 Tommy John surgery, giving up six runs on 13 hits and two walks over six innings. He'll more than likely face a restricted pitch count in his final outing of the season, but with a full offseason to recover, he could push for a full-time spot in the rotation in 2015.

Wieland lasted only 2.1 innings, giving up four runs and seven hits while striking out one and walking two Saturday against the Rockies.

It was Wieland's first game in nearly two and a half years since reconstructive elbow surgery. He last pitched on May 6, 2012 and it showed. He struggled through 2.1 innings, allowing four runs and seven hits, but he didn't figure in the decision.

Wieland will start Saturday against the Rockies, Corey Brock of reports.

Wieland will oppose Jorge De La Rosa at Coors Field exactly 28 months to the day since his last major league start. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July of 2012 and required another procedure in March of this year to clean up some loose bodies and an impingement in his elbow, but he was sharp in four starts for Triple-A El Paso, posting a 3.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB over 23.2 innings.

Wieland will be recalled from Triple-A San Antonio on Tuesday, Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reports.

Since he was reinstated from the 60-day DL on Aug. 10, Wieland has been a part of the Triple-A rotation, going 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA, 1.121 WHIP, and 20:4 K:BB in 23.2 innings (four starts). It's unclear if he'll be afforded spot nods with the big club, especially following Robbie Erlin's recall Monday, but the Padres will have the flexibility to turn to a six-man rotation with the moves.

Wieland was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Wieland's rocky road the past few years stemmed from Tommy John surgery in July of 2012, and his recovery lingered throughout the 2013 campaign. As he built up strength this spring, he suffered another setback, which required a clean-up procedure in late March. The final stages of his rehab included five starts between the Arizona League Padres and Double-A San Antonio. In two nods at the latter, he gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk to go with six strikeouts in nine innings. If he keeps up his recent pace, the Padres could use Wieland during the final month and a half, if Jesse Hahn is in fact shut down due to a fast-approaching innings limit.
