Hughes was tagged with his third blown save Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while recording just one out.

His role has become like that of an offensive lineman's -- he's only in the news when he messes up. Prior to Friday, Hughes had permitted runs in four of 26 outings. The righty has one win and nine holds to go along with a 3.63 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Batters are now hitting .314 off Hughes.

Hughes notched his first victory Sunday despite getting just one out while allowing a hit.

He's recorded eight holds and has allowed only two walks in 18 games (15.1 innings). Hughes entered Sunday with a 56.8 ground ball percentage, which is actually lower than his career mark of 60.7 percent. Pittsburgh typically doesn't use Hughes in late innings, but calls on him whenever ground balls and double plays are desired.

Hughes has made it through the Pirates' final cuts and will head north as part of the team's Opening Day roster, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Hughes has had a difficult spring but pitched well for Pittsburgh in 2014. The big righty, who can throw multiple innings, crafted a 1.96 ERA and 13 holds in 64.1 IP last season, though his 3.99 ERA (FIP) suggests he got a little lucky.

Hughes allowed three earned runs on four hits in two innings Thursday against the Yankees.

He's not assured of an Opening Day roster spot despite pitching well for the Pirates in 2014. Hughes has an option remaining while his competitors -- Arquimedes Caminero, Radhames Liz and Stolmy Pimentel -- do not.

Hughes allowed five earned runs on six hits Tuesday, retiring just one Baltimore batter, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

"Some of those ground balls were hit hard," Hughes said in defense of his infielders. "It was a tough day, but I've had tougher." Because Hughes and John Holdzkom -- two pitchers who helped Pittsburgh in 2014 -- have options remaining, one of them could start the season in Triple-A. The Pirates are taking a close look at two flame-throwing options, Arquimedes Caminero and Radhames Liz, both of whom have no options remaining.

Hughes surrendered three runs in an inning Friday against the Twins.

Hughes figures to once again serve as a sixth-or seventh-inning hurler capable of pitching multiple innings. He went 7-5 with 13 holds in 2014, but blew both of his save opportunities.

Hughes agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.075 million with Pittsburgh, avoiding arbitration, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

A 1.96 ERA in 64.1 IP last year belied his 3.99 FIP. Pittsburgh seems content to use Hughes as a middle-inning reliever, limiting his fantasy usefulness. The 29-year-old finished 2014 with seven relief wins, 13 holds and two blown saves.

Hughes was tendered a contract offer prior to Tuesday's deadline.

He'll look to build upon a strong 2014 during which he registered a 1.96 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 64.1 innings. Hughes gets by with one good pitch -- a sinking fastball -- and he's looked upon more as a multi-inning reliever than as a late-innings guy. His 3.99 FIP in 2014 nearly matched his career 4.00 mark.

Hughes has compiled career-best marks with an earned-run average of 1.76 and WHIP of 1.11 (in 46 IP) for the Pirates in 2014.

The team continues to use him in high leverage situations as early as in the fifth inning. Hughes has increased his ground-ball rate from 56.3 percent to 62.8 percent. The righty has snagged six relief wins and seven holds, though he ranks behind Mark Melancon and Tony Watson in the bullpen pecking order.
