Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that J.D. Drew would consider accepting a bench role for a team "if it were close to his Georgia home." Many have assumed that Drew will retire, but his agent, Scott Boras, says his client hasn't made any such announcement. The 36-year-old batted just .222/.315/.302 in 2011 and appeared in only 81 games due to injuries, but he'd make a fine bench option for the Braves or another team if he's indeed willing to accept a minor role.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, veteran outfielder J.D. Drew is "very likely" to retire. Drew has struggled mightily to attract free agent interest this winter after batting just .222/.315/.302 in 2011 and appearing in only 81 games due to injuries. If he is indeed finished, the 36-year-old outfielder will finish with a cool .873 career OPS, 1,437 career hits and 242 career homers. He played for the Cardinals, Braves, Dodgers and Red Sox during a 14-year major league career.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe was told by Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington that the team is not considering re-signing free agent outfielder J.D. Drew. The Sox have some more money to play with after dealing Marco Scutaro Saturday, but they apparently feel comfortable with their right field situation and will instead use that cash to upgrade the rotation. Drew isn't planning on retiring like he previously indicated he might, but there's been little buzz this offseason as to where he might wind up. He could make for a solid platoon guy if he manages to stay healthy, as he can still hit right-handed pitching.

J.D. Drew's agent Scott Boras said Monday that his client has not retired. Drew, 35, was limited to just 81 games this season due to injuries to his left shoulder and right middle finger, batting .222/.315/.302 over 286 plate appearances. Boras said he is willing to play next season given the right situation, but it's hard to believe a team will rely on him to be a regular contributor at this point of his career.

Red Sox activated outfielder J.D. Drew from the 60-day disabled list. Drew has not played since July because of a sore left shoulder and more recently a fractured knuckle on the middle finger of his right hand. He's in the lineup, batting seventh and playing right field, Sunday night. It's not a great sign for Boston that they are thrusting Drew into action for the first time in two months during Game Two of a doubleheader against the Yankees, with a mere half-game lead in the Wild Card race over Tampa Bay, but here we are. Drew hit an anemic .219/.317/.305 over 233 at-bats earlier this year.

J.D. Drew (finger) could return for the final series of the regular season. He originally went on the DL with a shoulder injury, but it's the finger that's more of an issue at this point. However, Drew took indoor batting practice Friday and his finger is evidently feeling well enough that he could be activated soon. He could be added to the potential ALDS roster if he looks good over the final few games.

J.D. Drew (finger) took indoor batting practice Friday. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Drew's swings looked "OK," but he didn't provide a timetable for when the outfielder might return. At this point it would be a surprise if he's back before the end of the season, and if that's the case, it seems doubtful that he'd be active for the ALDS. Drew has not played since July because of a sore left shoulder and more recently a fractured knuckle on the middle finger of his right hand.

J.D. Drew was given a cortisone shot in his fractured middle finger on Monday afternoon. The Red Sox are hoping the pain-killing injection will help Drew accelerate his rehab. He's been on the disabled list since late July -- first with a left shoulder injury, and now with a broken right middle finger. There's no timetable for his return.

J.D. Drew (finger) was scheduled to swing a bat Friday, but he is now dealing with a neck issue. Drew was originally placed on the disabled list in late-July with a left shoulder impingement, but suffered a fractured right middle finger while on a minor league rehab assignment. It's not yet clear if his latest setback is a major one, but the Red Sox obviously can't count on his return anytime soon.

Red Sox transferred OF J.D. Drew from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. Boston made the move to open a spot on the 40-man roster for a slew of roster moves upcoming. Drew was originally placed on the disabled list in July with a left shoulder impingement, but made little progress after hurting his middle finger in a rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket at the end of August. Drew was diagnosed with a fractured finger, which Red Sox GM Theo Epstein revealed Monday in a chat with WEEI radio in Boston. Josh Reddick should continue to get the majority of the playing time in right field.
