Richard signed a minor league contract with the Pirates on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training. Richard signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks midway through last season, and made four starts between Double-A and Triple-A, finishing with a 6.60 ERA and 1.80 WHIP with seven strikeouts over 15 innings at Double-A. With the Pirates in danger of losing Edinson Volquez and Francisco Liriano to free agency, Richard may have an outside shot at snagging a rotation spot with a strong spring training.
