Martinez (knee) hasn't played first base since June 1 and Tigers' manager Brad Ausmus says he is "going to be more cautious with him, period" to get his slugger through the season, reports the Detroit Free Press.
EDGE Analysis
VMart had been dealing with right knee soreness for almost a month before getting a cortisone shot a week-and-a-half ago. He's been DHing and had also been seeing time at first, but the reality is that the Tigers play with fire every time they put him in the field. Martinez has had two major left knee surgeries in his career and missed time in spring training with a hamstring injury. He has started just five games at first and may not even see time there in interleague play. "I think it will clear up somewhat (in the off-season), but probably for the rest of his career, you're going to have to take it more cautious in terms of playing time," continued Ausmus.
