Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons was diagnosed with a sprained thumb Sunday, and he is expected to miss at least a few games, according to MLB.com. X-rays on Simmons' thumb showed no fractures after he had the digit examined following Saturday's loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, and it is still possible that he could be placed on the 15-day disabled list. He will be evaluated again in Atlanta on Monday, which will help determine the need for the DL placement. Simmons suffered the injury during an at-bat in the seventh inning Saturday, as he was replaced by Daniel Castro for the eighth inning. He was still experiencing some soreness and swelling with his thumb Sunday, which is why he was held out of the lineup. Castro is expected to get a majority of the playing time while Simmons is sidelined, though Pedro Ciriaco could also fill in.
