Ramirez did not make it out of the second inning Monday in his four Cactus League start, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits as his bid for the fifth spot looks more and more like a long shot.

Taijuan Walker and Roenis Elias have out-pitched Ramirez this spring. He has just one walk in 10.2 innings, but he's only struck out five. Ramirez is out of options, so if he doesn't make the team he likely will be lost to waivers.

Ramirez gave up four hits and two unearned runs with no walks or strikeouts in two innings Friday in his spring debut.

Ramirez is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation with Taijuan Walker and Roenis Elias. Those two had much better spring debuts. The unearned runs were Ramirez's doing on an errant throw. He was also saved from a would-be two-run double by a stellar defensive play. Ramirez is out of options, but the Mariners will have less reluctance in designating him if he keeps pitching like this.

Ramirez, who is out of options and competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, is not being considered for a bullpen job, the Seattle Times reports.

That means if Ramirez doesn't beat out Taijuan Walker and Erasmo Ramirez for the rotation, he will be designated for assignment and likely picked up by another team. Whether the Mariners stick to that, manager Lloyd McClendon said, "That's a question for my general manager." If the Mariners kept him as the long reliever in the bullpen, they'd probably have to sacrifice a middle-relief lefty. McClendon went with an eight-man bullpen for part of last season, but it's unlikely he'd open the season like that this year because it would leave him with only a three-man bench and Rickie Weeks as the only infield backup.

Ramirez will be in the mix for the fifth starter job this spring, the Mariners' official site reports.

Taijuan Walker is the likely frontrunner, while Roenis Elias is also part of the competition. Ramirez may be destined to fill a long-relief role if he remains in Seattle as a part of the team's Opening Day roster. Last season, he struggled to the tune of a 5.26 ERA and 1.54 WHIP over 17 appearances (14 starts) for the Mariners.

Ramirez will be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, after which he'll serve out of the Mariners' bullpen, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Because he was bombarded in his previous appearance in the majors last Wednesday -- 10 runs on nine hits and one walk to go with one strikeout in three innings -- Ramirez will be placed in situations in which he can be more successful. Considering the strength of the Mariners is its bullpen, low-leverage situations are probably the best he can hope far at the moment.

Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma Friday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

Ramirez will likely return to the big club when rosters expand in September, but with him unavailable for another day or two after starting Wednesday, the Mariners decided to remove him from the roster to make room for outfielder James Jones.

Ramirez was tagged for 10 runs on nine hits over three innings in his start against the Rangers on Wednesday afternoon.

Wednesday marked the first time this season that the Mariners have allowed 10 runs in a game. Ramirez's status in the rotation beyond Wednesday's start was uncertain even prior to the poor result, but he'll presumably serve in a long relief role upon roster expansion in September if he doesn't stick with Seattle through the beginning of next week.

Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Ramirez will get the start Wednesday against the Rangers, but it's unclear if he'll stick in the rotation beyond that. James Paxton tossed 6.2 shutout innings Tuesday to build a strong case for a starting spot, and Ramirez may have to come close to matching that performance to hold down a spot of his role. The team could also make room for both pitchers in their rotation by bumping Roenis Elias to the bullpen, since his control has betrayed him in each of his last two turns.

Ramirez will start Wednesday against the Rangers, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.

He has a 4.06 ERA in 64.1 innings as a starter with Seattle this season, so he's not a horrible play in deeper leagues, especially considering the Rangers are only starting a few competent big-league hitters at the moment. It does seem likely, however, that this will just be a spot start for Ramirez, as the Mariners wanted to get Felix Hernandez on schedule to be able to start the American League Wild Card game.

Though Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon doesn't foresee many players getting recalled with the September roster expansion, Ramirez appears to have a good chance to come back to the majors.

The Mariners are already carrying an eight-man bullpen, so their need for extra arms isn't acute. Ramirez and Taijuan Walker might be it for the Mariners.
