Volquez (5-4) gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out five, but came away with a no-decision in a 5-4 win over the White Sox.

Competitive Edge Analysis

As per usual, Volquez kept the ball on the ground, generating double-digit groundballs for the fourth straight start and ninth time in 11 outings this season. He was in line to take the loss Sunday, getting outdueled by Chris Sale, but the Royals were able to stage another late-inning rally to get him off the hook. Volquez will next take to the mound Friday in Cleveland.

Volquez (5-4) allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 6.2 inning in Tuesday's win over the Twins.

Competitive Edge Analysis

Volquez has alternated quality starts and starts with four or more runs allowed going back to his fourth start of the season April 21 against Detroit. He was able to induced 13 swinging strikes and nine groundball outs against the Twins, but his control was rough all night, as he threw just 13 first-pitch strikes to 29 hitters. He was solid but inconsistent, much like his whole season has been thus far.

Volquez (4-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks over six innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Competitive Edge Analysis

A couple solo homers early and a two-run rally in his final frame did Volquez in. Things looked pretty early in the season, but under the hood, this is the same old Volquez -- his command and control come and go, while he doesn't quite have enough strikeout stuff most nights. He's become fairly adept at working out of the jams he so often works himself into, but the sum of it still doesn't add up to anything more than a low-end starter in standard fantasy formats.

Volquez (4-3) allowed just one run on six hits, struck out two and walked none over seven innings in a victory against the Braves on Friday.

Competitive Edge Analysis

The right-hander rebounded nicely, snapping a three-game losing streak in which he allowed 15 runs. He only had four swing-and-missed, but Volquez induced 12 ground ball outs, which helped him keep his pitch count low. He only threw 83 pitches, 55 for a strike, in seven innings. His next start will be Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Volquez (3-3) lasted just 4.1 innings Sunday, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four in a 5-4 loss to the Indians.

Competitive Edge Analysis

He's now lost three straight starts after winning three of his first four, and Volquez has seen his ERA soar from 1.09 to 3.89 in the process. He stands a good chance of snapping his losing streak in his next outing, however, at home Friday against the lowly Braves.

Volquez (3-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts in a tough loss Monday against the Nationals.

Competitive Edge Analysis

After allowing two runs in the first inning, Volquez settled in and absolutely locked down the Nationals. He induced 11 swinging strikes and nine ground ball outs, threw 20 first-pitch strikes to 29 batters and threw 72 strikes in 114 pitches to keep his team in the game. Unfortunately, Gio Gonzalez (six shutout innings) was better, but Volquez has given owners plenty to like this year. Other than a disaster last time out against the Angels (eight runs in five innings), Volquez has gone at least 5.2 innings and allowed two runs or less every time out.

Volquez (3-1) allowed eight runs on 12 hits and two walks over five innings Tuesday in a loss Tuesday against the Angels.

Competitive Edge Analysis

Volquez was on fire to begin the season, as he allowed just four earned in his first four starts, but the floodgates opened up Tuesday night. Volquez pounded the zone and got punished for it. The Angels socked 11 singles off him before Johnny Giavotella, slugging .136 entering the night, delivered the coup de grace with a three-run homer, just the second Volquez has allowed all year. Volquez wasn't going to keep avoiding crooked numbers all year long, but regression bit him hard Tuesday night, as his ERA jumped from 1.46 to 3.64.

Volquez (3-0) remained undefeated Thursday with seven shutout innings against the Tigers, striking out five while working around five hits and a walk.

Competitive Edge Analysis

He's off to a startlingly good April in his second season as a Royal, having allowed only four runs in 24.2 innings with a 22:8 K:BB. That said, with a 1.43 career WHIP to his name and no full season better than 1.23, Volquez is a prime regression candidate. His 3.45 xFIP is more indicative than his 1.46 ERA of what we can expect from him moving forward.

Volquez allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out 10 over 5.2 innings, but received no decision Sunday against the Twins.

Competitive Edge Analysis

Despite leaving the game with a 2-1 deficit, the Royals mounted a comeback in the late innings and took Volquez off the hook for a possible loss. Although he failed to pitch over six innings in either of his first two starts, he's off to a great start with a sparkling 1.54 ERA. He'll make his next start Friday at the Athletics.

Volquez was excellent in Sunday's win over the Mets, tossing six shutout innings with five strikeouts and three walks en route to a win.

Competitive Edge Analysis

The 32-year-old justified manager Ned Yost's decision to name him Opening Day starter, and he could have gone even deeper into the game if not for his elevated pitch count. Volquez was a reliable fantasy starter in 2015, and he looks poised to continue that success after Sunday's performance.
