Volquez struck out three and walked one while giving up one run on three hits over seven innings en route to his eighth win of the season Friday night against Oakland.

While he didn't pile up many strikeouts, Volquez effectively kept the Oakland lineup quiet Friday night. With an excellent defense behind him, Volquez has a career-best 1.17 WHIP this season, but his peripherals are nearly identical to his 2014 marks with the Pirates when he posted 17.3% K% and 8.8% BB%. Volquez will match up with the Astros on the road Wednesday in his next scheduled start.

Volquez nabbed a win Saturday despite allowing four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings with 0 strikeouts.

Volquez was saved from a loss by an awful outing from Rick Porcello and then had the lead preserved by another scoreless outing from the Kansas City bullpen. His record now stands at 7-4 thanks to three straight wins, but he will likely face a tough lineup in his next start Friday against the Athletics.

Volquez picked up the win to move to 6-4 as he allowed two runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Volquez was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the top of the sixth and probably had more life in him, but with 78 pitches he did enough to qualify for the victory. Volquez was shaky, however -- he had narrowly escaped a bases loaded situation in the fifth, and had already allowed two runs in the inning -- and may have been done a favor by the quick hook. He wouldn't have come out unscathed without the help of the Royals slick defense, the real key to his 3.10 ERA, but luckily for him, they're not going anywhere any time soon.

Volquez struck out six and walked three while giving up four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Friday night.

He didn't pitch all that well, but there was no margin for error for Volquez on Friday night with Chi Chi Gonzalez firing a three-hit shutout against the Royals in his second big league start. Volquez will face the Twins at Target Field on Wednesday in his next scheduled start.

Volquez gave up three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Friday, walking one while striking out nine.

Volquez set a new season high in strikeouts against a free-swinging Cubs team -- his previous high was seven -- but needed 109 pitches to complete the 5.2 frames. He has a 2.95 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through 10 starts, but Volquez has been relatively lucky with a .241 opponents' BABIP, 69.4 percent strand rate and 4.9 percent HR/FB rate.

Volquez gave up four earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three Tuesday against the Rangers.

He only made it three innings in his previous start due to a blister, so fortunately he was able to go deeper into Tuesday's game. Still, it was not a very effective showing, as he failed to record many strikeouts and also failed to pitch past the fifth inning. After a surprisingly excellent start to the season, Volquez appears to be settling in as the back-end starter many projected him to be heading into 2015. However, he does still have a good ballpark, great defense and excellent bullpen surrounding him, so his fringe ability should be maximized.

Volquez (hand) has been confirmed as the starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.

A blister on his hand limited Volquez to three innings and affected his control in his last start Thursday, but the setback will not prevent him from taking the mound Tuesday night. Volquez has been brilliant when healthy this season, but it's not clear if the blister has completely healed, so there remains the possibility it could be an issue again Tuesday night.

Volquez suffered a blister on his right thumb during Thursday's start against the Indians, but he is not in danger of landing on the disabled list, FSKC's Joel Goldberg reports.

The blister reportedly popped during the third inning of Thursday's game, which may explain why Volquez walked four batters in the frame. His stat line for the afternoon was pretty ugly, as he gave up three runs on two hits and six walks over three innings. He's otherwise been effective this season, largely avoiding the walks that plagued him in past years. Volquez's next outing is scheduled for Tuesday in Arlington.
