Volquez allowed just one run with three strikeouts and three walks across six strong innings Sunday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez was effective Sunday, inducing 13 ground-ball outs, and he was on the hook for the win until he was finally scored upon in the sixth inning, just before he was removed from the game. Volquez reduced his earned runs against for the fourth consecutive outing, tossing his third consecutive quality start, and he lowered his season ERA to 4.56. He is scheduled to take on the same Rangers club on the road Friday.

Volquez allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Monday against Cleveland.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez now has three quality starts in four outings since serving up a season-high 12 runs June 24 against Houston. His control makes him too inconsistent to be a top of the line starter -- Monday marked the 10th time already this season he has walked three or more batters -- but he remains nasty enough to get outs against major league hitters.

Volquez (8-8) gave up three earned runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Mariners. He struck out three.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran right-hander turned in an efficient performance, getting through his six frames on just 91 pitches, 68 of which he threw for strikes. Volquez stayed ahead of a potent Mariners lineup throughout the afternoon, notching first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 24 hitters he faced. He's now won three of his last four decisions and will look to extend his recent stretch of mostly solid pitching in the second half of the campaign.

Volquez (7-8) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss Monday to Toronto.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez has now allowed at least four runs in five of his past seven starts and has watched his ERA jump from 3.74 to 4.89 in that period. He was cruising until the seventh, when he gave up three of his four runs, including one he walked in. Control has been a huge problem for Volquez, as he has a brutal 28:17 K:BB over 38 innings in his cold stretch. Unless he can rein in his control, things aren't likely to get much better anytime soon.

Volquez didn't allow a run in 6.2 innings but settled for a no-decision in an extra-inning victory against the Cardinals on Wednesday. He also yielded six hits, struck out four and walked one.

EDGE Analysis

This was an ideal bounce back game for Volquez after he allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in just one inning against Houston in his last outing. Three of the six hits Volquez yielded Wednesday were infield singles, so he pretty much kept all the Cardinals hitters in check. He threw 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes and induced 16 swing-and-misses. His control was excellent, as it was also just the second time in six outings that he didn't walk at least two batters. Volquez remains 7-7 but drops his ERA to 4.80 and WHIP to 1.43. His next start will be Monday against the Blue Jays.

Volquez (7-6) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out six in Saturday's win over the Tigers.

EDGE Analysis

Lucky for Volquez, the Royals lit up Tigers pitchers all night, affording the righty the chance to earn a win on a night he wasn't at his best. One major positive, however, is that he didn't issue a walk for the third time in his 15 starts this season. Last year, he had only three walk-free performances in 33 starts. The 32-year-old veteran has struggled with his control throughout his career (4.2 BB/9), so gaining a grip on his pitch location would go a long way in improving his fantasy value.

Volquez (6-6) blanked the Indians over seven innings to earn the win Monday night. He allowed two hits, walked four, and struck out three.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez's start was a nice rebound after he was knocked out after 4.2 innings in his previous outing and allowed five runs in the one before that. The righty will look to keep the momentum going when he takes the mound against the Tigers Saturday.

Volquez (5-6) was chased with two outs in the fifth inning Wednesday after allowing four runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out five.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez and O's starter Chris Tillman were matching zeroes up until the wheels came off for the Dominican veteran in that fateful fifth frame. After getting the first out, he proceeded to load the bases, then gave up a two-run double, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single before manager Ned Yost had seen enough. Those fantasy owners who invested in Volquez were rewarded with four strong outings to open the year, but he's been somewhere between unreliable and simply terrible since. In his last nine starts, the 32-year-old has won only twice while giving up a brutal 34 earned runs in 54.2 innings, good for a 5.60 ERA. It's getting to be worth wondering how much more patience the Royals will show with him -- Volquez has always lived on the edge, and now he's falling off it.

Volquez allowed five runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out five over 6.1 innings of a 6-1 loss to Cleveland on Friday night.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez (5-5) has been inconsistent which is pretty much his norm over the years. In this one he just couldn't command the strike zone leading to a high pitch count (115 pitches, 67 for strikes) and far too many baserunners. Its the price fantasy owner pay for using Volquez who faces another tough assignment when he takes on the Orioles at Camden Yards in his next scheduled start.

Volquez (5-4) gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out five, but came away with a no-decision in a 5-4 win over the White Sox.

EDGE Analysis

As per usual, Volquez kept the ball on the ground, generating double-digit groundballs for the fourth straight start and ninth time in 11 outings this season. He was in line to take the loss Sunday, getting outdueled by Chris Sale, but the Royals were able to stage another late-inning rally to get him off the hook. Volquez will next take to the mound Friday in Cleveland.
