Volquez (10-10) pitched five innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two Marlins in Thursday's win.

EDGE Analysis

For the first time since June 29 -- a span of 10 starts - Volquez made it through an outing without allowing an earned run, lowering his ERA to 4.88, its best mark since late-July. Thursday was a nice touch on an otherwise awful month up to this point. Through five starts in August, the righty owns a 5.81 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in five starts (26.1 innings). Volquez will make one more start before turning the calendar to September when he takes the hill Tuesday against the Yankees.

Volquez (9-10) allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and one walk while striking out three over six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Twins.

EDGE Analysis

After finishing May with a 3.74 ERA, Volquez has failed to post quality starts in nine different outings since, causing his ERA to soar to 4.95 on the year. This performance comes on the heels of him posting an ERA in the threes in each of the last two seasons, which is hardly a good sign for a 33-year old pitcher. He'll make his next start Friday against the Twins.

Volquez allowed four runs on 10 hits and a walk and struck out two over six innings in a no-decision Tuesday against the White Sox.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez is going through a cold streak, as he has now allowed at least nine hits and four runs in each of his past three starts. He induced just six swinging strikes in 97 pitches and his inability to miss bats came back to bite him in a three-run fifth in which the White Sox knocked in three straight runs via RBI singles. Volquez's ERA is now up to 5.03 and he has allowed 156 hits in just 141.1 innings.

Volquez (8-10) gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and three walks in a loss to the Rays on Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

Things are getting worse, not better for Volquez, whose ERA Is climbing back toward 5.00 instead of dropping into the threes, which is what his fantasy owners would like to see. He was at 3.90 as recently as mid-June; the Dominican righty has seen his ERA climb more than a full point to 4.99 since then. Volquez has always put too many men on base and (not unrelatedly) struck out too few, but that hasn't been been nearly as bad this year as it was in his disastrous 2011 and 2013 campaigns.

Volquez (8-9) pitched six innings, allowing six runs (five earned), nine hits and two walks while striking out five Rangers in Friday's loss.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez's inconsistent season continued Friday, allowing four-plus runs for the ninth time in his 22 starts this season. After beginning the year with three straight wins, Volquez has put consecutive wins together just once since April 21. His 4.56 ERA and 1.39 WHIP is hardly what owners bought in for this year. The righty will look to rebound in his next start Wednesday against the Rays.

Volquez allowed just one run with three strikeouts and three walks across six strong innings Sunday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez was effective Sunday, inducing 13 ground-ball outs, and he was on the hook for the win until he was finally scored upon in the sixth inning, just before he was removed from the game. Volquez reduced his earned runs against for the fourth consecutive outing, tossing his third consecutive quality start, and he lowered his season ERA to 4.56. He is scheduled to take on the same Rangers club on the road Friday.

Volquez allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Monday against Cleveland.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez now has three quality starts in four outings since serving up a season-high 12 runs June 24 against Houston. His control makes him too inconsistent to be a top of the line starter -- Monday marked the 10th time already this season he has walked three or more batters -- but he remains nasty enough to get outs against major league hitters.

Volquez (8-8) gave up three earned runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Mariners. He struck out three.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran right-hander turned in an efficient performance, getting through his six frames on just 91 pitches, 68 of which he threw for strikes. Volquez stayed ahead of a potent Mariners lineup throughout the afternoon, notching first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 24 hitters he faced. He's now won three of his last four decisions and will look to extend his recent stretch of mostly solid pitching in the second half of the campaign.

Volquez (7-8) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss Monday to Toronto.

EDGE Analysis

Volquez has now allowed at least four runs in five of his past seven starts and has watched his ERA jump from 3.74 to 4.89 in that period. He was cruising until the seventh, when he gave up three of his four runs, including one he walked in. Control has been a huge problem for Volquez, as he has a brutal 28:17 K:BB over 38 innings in his cold stretch. Unless he can rein in his control, things aren't likely to get much better anytime soon.

Volquez didn't allow a run in 6.2 innings but settled for a no-decision in an extra-inning victory against the Cardinals on Wednesday. He also yielded six hits, struck out four and walked one.

EDGE Analysis

This was an ideal bounce back game for Volquez after he allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in just one inning against Houston in his last outing. Three of the six hits Volquez yielded Wednesday were infield singles, so he pretty much kept all the Cardinals hitters in check. He threw 64 of his 104 pitches for strikes and induced 16 swing-and-misses. His control was excellent, as it was also just the second time in six outings that he didn't walk at least two batters. Volquez remains 7-7 but drops his ERA to 4.80 and WHIP to 1.43. His next start will be Monday against the Blue Jays.
