Volquez surrendered four earned runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings in Monday's spring start.

Volquez now owns a dreadful 9.49 spring ERA, but the veteran remains optimistic about his performance moving forward. Despite the recent struggles, Volquez will still occupy the three-spot in the Royals' rotation in 2015, per the Kansas City Star.

Volquez has agreed with the Royals for a two-year, $20 million contract, Jon Heyman reports.

This comes after a career year for Volquez with the Pirates, a 3.04 ERA over 192.2 innings. A huge part of that was Volquez's career low 8.8 BB/9. However, Volquez could be a major regression candidate for 2015, as last season featured him outperforming his FIP and xFIP by more than an entire run. Proceed with caution.

Volquez has been confirmed as the Wild Card starter for the Pirates.

A surprising year from the Dominican gives him the chance to decide the Pirates' fate, head to Washington D.C. on Friday for a playoff series or watch another trip to the playoffs end early. Leading Pittsburgh with 190.2 innings pitched while sporting a 3.07 ERA, Volquez has been the team's most valuable pitcher this season. However, his FIP and xFIP are a full run higher than his ERA, so his strong regular season results might not be reproducible in the playoffs.

Volquez would start in the NL Wild Card game for the Pirates on Wednesday, if necessary, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.

Volquez made his final start of the regular season Thursday, cashing in a strong performance of seven shutout innings for the Pirates. The team enters Sunday's games just one game back of the Cardinals for the NL Central lead, so if they're able to force a tie, the two teams would play Monday for the division title. In any case, if the Pirates end up in second place, they would play Wednesday in the NL Wild Card game. Volquez would take the hill in that contest on five days rest.

Volquez (13-7) wrapped up his regular season on a high note Thursday, striking out 10 Braves over seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and a walk.

One of the most inconsistent pitchers in the game throughout his career, Volquez had a breakout season as a 31-year-old, posting a 3.04 ERA and 1.23 WHIP -- both career bests. Quite the turnaround from last year's 6.01 ERA as a Padre. Next up: the playoffs.

Despite giving up four hits and walking five, Volquez allowed just one earned run in seven innings Sunday. He struck out five.

He struggled with his control -- throwing only 58 of 98 pitches for strikes -- but a rare triple play helped the righty out of a jam. Volquez will face the Brewers at PNC Park in an NL Central showdown in Week 25.

Volquez was terrific Wednesday against St. Louis but did not factor into the decision after shutting out the Cardinals for 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out five.

Volquez has been very good recently and for much of the season for the Pirates. He's proven to be an excellent offseason pickup, posting a 3.31 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 11-7 record on the season.

Volquez was sharp again Friday night allowing just one run on three hits, walking three and striking out six over 7.2 innings, but was left with a no-decision against the Reds.

He was working on a no-hitter through six innings and didn't allow a run until the eighth, but he was matched virtually pitch-for-pitch by Mike Leake of the Reds. He'll take on the Cardinals in St. Louis in his next outing.

Volquez (11-7), who won for the seventh time in eight decisions Saturday, allowed two runs on 11 hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out three batters.

Despite allowing a liberal number of hits, Volquez pitched effectively in key spots. He retired both Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. The righty threw 104 pitches (including 69 for strikes). His leash might've been shorter if the Bucs had not held a six-run lead during the last two innings he pitched, but the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent kept the Brewers in check.

Volquez turned in 6.1 innings versus the Nationals on Sunday, allowing four runs (one earned), six hits and two walks while striking out five.

Volquez continued his solid month with Sunday's performance. Over four starts in August, the Pirates' right-hander has posted an impressive 2.16 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 7.9 K/9 across 25 innings. Volquez will look to keep it going next weekend in Milwaukee.
