Barmes has opted out of his minor league contract on Monday and was released by the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Barmes hoped to be added to a 25-man roster when he opted out of his contract, and the Royals decided to release him. He was mostly used for organizational depth in the middle infield positions.

Barmes re-signed with the Royals on a minor league contract Friday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Royals released the aging shortstop Monday, but they saw enough value in him to bring him back on a minor league pact. That being said, he'll likely spend 2016 with Triple-A Omaha acting as organizational depth at the middle infield positions.

Barmes is working on resigning with the Royals on a minor league contract, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
EDGE Analysis
A source reportedly said the deal is likely, so the veteran shortstop could be back in Royal blue despite being released Monday. That being said, he'll likely just act as organizational depth in the Royals organization, with a callup only happening if the Royals middle infield gets hit with injuries.

The Royals released Barmes on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
The journeyman infielder landed a minor league contract with the Royals in the offseason, and the first two weeks of camp appeared to be going swimmingly, as he went 6-for-19 (.316) with two RBI and one run scored. However, he mustered just two hits in his final 15 spring at-bats, all but forcing Kansas City's hand. Nevertheless, the 37-year-old will likely land elsewhere as organizational depth.

Barmes signed a minor league deal with the Royals on Thursday, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 36-year-old doesn't appear ready to call it a career just yet. He spent 2015 with the Padres, hitting .232/.281/.353 with three home runs and 16 RBI. However, if he doesn't make the big league team, retirement could be looming. His fantasy value is likely to be minimal in 2016.

Barmes' option for 2016 was declined by the Padres, making him a free agent.
EDGE Analysis
It's uncertain if Barmes, who turns 37 before the start of the 2016 season, will continue his playing career or hang up the boots after 13 seasons. He hit .232/.281/.353 in 98 games with San Diego in 2015, bringing his career batting line to .245/.294/.379.

Barmes went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored Saturday against the Diamondbacks. He's now stunningly sitting on a .293 batting average, though it's been boosted by an absurd .410 BABIP, and with just four walks against 29 strikeouts over 92 at-ats this season, Barmes isn't exactly experiencing a late-career surge. He also doesn't get to play every day, limiting his value to NL-only formats.

Barmes went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 4-3 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday. A home run off Clayton Kershaw is impressive, but when Barmes does it, it's almost unbelievable, but he helped chase the Dodgers' ace from the game in the seventh inning. He's also raised his average to a surprising .284 thanks to a recent hot streak -- over his last six starts, he's gone 10-for-23 (.435) with a double, a triple and a homer. Barmes still splits time at shortstop with Alexi Amarista and doesn't have much in the way of tools, but he's proven ownable in NL-only formats.

Barmes is starting at shortstop Monday and will bat eighth against the Dodgers. Barmes gets the nod over Alexi Amarista, but it could be a temporary lineup change as Amarista is expected to be the everyday shortstop. That said, Barmes has had some success against Dodgers' starter Clayton Kershaw, going 7-for-27 against the three-time Cy Young winner.
