Valaika was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. The 29-year-old Valaika can play all over the infield, but his bat doesn't play well in the majors. He'll likely spend the year with Triple-A Iowa.

Valaika is out of the lineup Monday against the Cardinals. Valaika has seen relatively consistent work for the Cubs at first and second base during the final month of the season, but will take a seat for the Monday night contest. Arismendy Alcantara will take over at the keystone, while Ryan Kalish mans center field. Valaika batted below .200 over his first month with the club, but has raised his season average 40 points after hitting .280 in September.

Valaika is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates. Valaika has started 11 straight games for the Cubs, but will give way to Mike Olt at first base Sunday, while Luis Valbuena mans the hot corner. The 29-year-old Valaika had been riding a mini four-game hitting streak, and owns a .670 OPS over 80 at-bats this season.

Valaika went 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer against the Brewers on Wednesday. Valaika is slashing .208/.266/.347 since being called up from triple-A Iowa on August 2. The 29-year-old utility player has been starting at first base recently, but has been working out at catcher on the side to increase his versatility.

Valaika will try his hand at catching, the Cubs' official site reports. Valaika can play a lot of different positions, but if he can add catching to the mix he may have a shot at making the team out of camp next season.

Cubs sign INF Chris Valaika to a minor league contact. The deal includes an invitation to spring training. The 28-year-old spent the 2013 season with the Marlins, hitting .219/.261/.344 with 16 strikeouts in 64 at-bats. He has the ability to handle all four infield positions defensively and should compete for a reserve role with the Marlins during spring training.

Marlins sent INF Chris Valaika outright to Triple-A New Orleans. Valaika was designated for assignment by the Fish on Tuesday. He's a .244/.281/.362 hitter in the majors.

Marlins activated INF Chris Valaika from the 60-day disabled list; designated him for assignment. Some more 40-man roster maneuvers for the Marlins, who are calling up top prospects Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick on Tuesday. Valaika has been sidelined for over two months following surgery to repair a left wrist fracture. He's likely to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Marlins transferred INF Chris Valaika from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. The move was made in order to add recent acquisitions Josh Wall and Stephen Ames to the 40-man roster. Valaika has already missed 60 days while recovering from a left wrist fracture. There's no timetable for his return.

Chris Valaika underwent successful surgery on Friday, having two pins inserted into his wrist. Valaika is expected to require 4-6 weeks of healing time before he's able to return to the Marlins. He had been virtually ineffective in his 22 games before the injury, hitting .219/.261/.344 with one homer and nine RBI.
