Utley (ankle) said he was unsure how long he will be sidelined, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. "Talking to the doctor today, the more time I can lay off it, the better chance it has to heal properly," Utley said. "I don't have an exact time frame."

Utley was scheduled to get a cortisone shot Wednesday. He is dealing with lingering inflammation in his ankle that he originally injured in an offseason workout. Utley is eligible to return on July 8, but given how close that is to the All-Star break, it would not be a surprise to see him rest the ankle until at least July 17.

Utley (ankle) will receive a cortisone injection on Wednesday, CSN Philadelphia reports.

Utley was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with inflammation in his right ankle. He said the ankle, which he originally injured in an offseason workout, has bothered him throughout the season. Head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said Utley had an MRI in mid-May which showed inflammation on the bone and a ligament that was still healing. Cesar Hernandez will fill in at second for the Phillies while Utley is sidelined.

Utley was placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday with right ankle inflammation.

While this is disappointing on many levels, Utley had probably been doing more damage than good to fantasy rosters so far this season, and health issues were likely strongly contributing to his struggles. Cesar Hernandez and Andres Blanco should see time at second base in the meantime and Darin Ruf was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to offer depth while Utley is sidelined.

Utley is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, the Philadelphia Daily News' Ryan Lawrence reports.

Utley is out of the lineup for a third time in the last five games, with Cesar Hernandez getting another start at second base. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Monday that Utley's vesting option at 500 plate appearances won't affect any decisions, but the skipper also suggested he'd like to get Hernandez more at-bats. With Utley still struggling at the plate, it's not in the team's interest to put him in the lineup every day.

Manager Ryne Sandberg said Utley's vesting option for 2016 does not factor into his decision-making with his lineup, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.

Utley has a $15 million option for 2016 that vests with 500 plate appearances. He is at 249 plate appearances, putting him on pace to easily hit 500 before the season ends. Utley continues to struggle at the plate. He went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Monday while the rest of his teammates put up 11 runs on 18 hits against the Yankees. Sandberg has indicated he would like to get Cesar Hernandez more playing time, but he has been unwilling to cut into Utley's at-bats thus far.

Manager Ryne Sandberg said he would like to get Cesar Hernandez, who is the primary backup to Utley at second base, more playing time, the Phillies' official site reports.

Utley, who was out of the lineup Sunday, is hitting just .182 with a .539 OPS in 244 plate appearances this season. He needs 256 more plate appearances for his $15 million option for 2016 to automatically vest. Utley is unlikely to lose his starting job outright, but it sounds like Hernandez will cut into his playing time until his offensive production picks up.

Utley is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals, CSN Philadelphia reports.

Utley will miss his second contest in the past three, which isn't a huge surprise given his .182/.258/.280 batting line on the season. He will cede Sunday's start to Cesar Hernandez, who'll bat second for the Phillies.

Utley is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals, Stephen Gross of the Philadelphia Morning Call reports.

Utley emerged from his early-season slump to piece together a solid month of May, but he owns a .140/.220/.220 slash line in June, despite having a 5:6 K:BB ratio. Although his batted-ball issues appear to go beyond poor luck, his .188 BABIP is still flukishly low. He may start to get more rest, but he's in no danger of losing his starting job.

Utley took ground balls at first base before Monday's game, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The Phillies are without a true backup to Ryan Howard at first base after sending Darin Ruf to the minors this past weekend. Utley and Andres Blanco are candidates to start at first when Howard needs a day off.

Utley is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.

Utley has been in a slump at the dish recently, going 0-for-19 in his last five starts. With the left-handed Jeff Locke going for the Pirates on Friday, the Phillies will send out Andres Blanco at second base, who'll bat second.
