McGehee accepted his assignment and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.

The Giants lost patience with the struggling McGehee, who could still contribute to the team's cause at some point before the end of the season. For now, Matt Duffy is getting the vast majority of the playing time at third base.

McGehee was designated for assignment Sunday, Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group reports.

McGehee had been losing playing time to Matt Duffy of late, but few expected this move from the Giants. He had shown slight signs of improvement at the plate from April to May, but a .200/.254/.282 slash line simply wasn't going to cut it. McGehee can now elect to accept his designation, or become a free agent if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

McGehee is not in the lineup Sunday against the Rockies.

McGehee will have now been held out of the starting lineup for three of the last six games, suggesting his hold on the third base position may be slipping towards Matt Duffy. The veteran should be available to pinch-hit, if needed, in the afternoon contest.

McGehee is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.

McGehee will sit for a second straight game and for the fourth time in the team's last six games as Matt Duffy once again mans the hot corner. Perhaps he will get a chance against right-hander David Hale in Game 2, but McGehee is sporting a .189/.246/.274 batting line through 114 plate appearances and seems to have fallen behind Duffy in the eyes of manager Bruce Bochy.

McGehee will be in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros, CSN's Andrew Baggarly reports.

McGehee is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Astros.

McGehee provided some hope for a turnaround Friday when he smacked a grand slam in a 2-for-4 effort, but he followed that up by going 0-for-7 with three strikeouts in the final two games against Miami. Even with the DH option available to him in Houston, manager Bruce Bochy has decided not to start McGehee on Tuesday. Matt Duffy will get the nod at third base.

McGehee hit a grand slam to open up the game in the 6-0 win over the Marlins Friday.

McGehee went 2-for-4 in the game and it's nice to see him step up big as he has done very little all season long. With this four RBI-performance, he more than doubled his previous total of three and doubled his home run total of one. McGehee will need more games like this if he is to keep his job all season long.
