Ruiz is not in the lineup Friday, the Morning Call's Stephen Gross reports.

Ruiz is just getting a typical day off -- his first of the year. He has three hits through three games, and also has four walks, and considering he is batting second on most days, Ruiz should be owned in most mid-sized leagues. Cameron Rupp will get the start behind the dish Friday.

Ruiz underwent surgery on his left shoulder Monday, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports.

Ruiz will begin his rehab immediately and will return for a follow-up exam in a month. The injury isn't expected to have any lasting effects that would compromise his availability for spring training. The 35-year-old backstop played in 110 games for the Phillies in 2014, posting a batting line of .252/.347/.717 with six home runs and 31 RBI. His workload should remain similar in 2015.
