Wilson was released by the Dodgers on Friday, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports. This move was effectively made Tuesday, when the Dodgers designated Wilson for assignment, but the three-time All-Star is now officially a free agent after clearing waivers. Wilson lost more than a mile per hour off his fastball last season, resulting in a career-worst 4.29 FIP over 48.1 innings. At 32, his days as a reliable back-end bullpen option are seemingly over.

The Dodgers designated Wilson for assignment Tuesday. With Brandon McCarthy's signing becoming official, the Dodgers had to clear room on their 40-man roster. Wilson's $9.5 million salary for 2015 was already a sunk cost, and it seems the Dodgers just decided to cut their losses entirely and move on. A three-time All-Star, Wilson posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.61 WHIP last season as a 32-year-old, with 54 strikeouts against 29 walks.

Wilson exercised his option to return to the Dodgers for 2015. The 32-year-old righty will make $9.5 million next year, which is certainly more than he would have received as a free agent, after posting one of the worst seasons of his career in 2014. He had a 4.66 ERA and a 13 percent walk rate in 48.1 innings last season, and will likely be used primarily in low-leverage innings next season.

Wilson has informed that Dodgers that he will exercise his player option for 2015, SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports. This was likely a no-brainer for Wilson, because after a 2014 season in which he posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 48.1 innings, he almost certainly wouldn't command a $9-10 million salary on the open market. The 32-year-old did average better than a strikeout per inning (10.1 K/9), but he'll make for a rather risky option in holds leagues next year given his control issues (5.4 BB/9).

Wilson has a six-game streak in which he has not allowed a run, a period covering 3.1 innings. Perhaps the Dodgers have found a formula that works with the bearded one - not letting him fact more than a hitter or two per outing. Wilson still has a 4.85 ERA, but he's again pitching in late-game situations, so the holds should continue to be there as long as he has success.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly admits to being concerned about the struggling Brian Wilson but says the reliever insists he's healthy. "I don't think we're there," Mattingly said. "He tells Stan [Conte, head trainer] and all our guys -- we check with him all the time -- that he's fine. He says he's healthy." Wilson holds a 10.22 ERA and 2.43 WHIP over 16 appearances this season and has on occasion struggled to reach 90 mph on the radar gun. He was on the DL last month with an elbow issue, so you've got to wonder whether he's in fact healthy as he claims to be.

Brian Wilson declared Friday that his elbow feels fine and that he's just not in sync at the moment. The 32-year-old hurler has posted an uninspiring 15.75 ERA, 3.00 WHIP and 4/4 K/BB ratio through his first four innings of work on the season. Chris Perez appears to have surpassed him as the primary setup man, and should be considered the handcuff to Kenley Jansen at the moment.

Dodgers activated RHP Brian Wilson from the 15-day disabled list. Wilson made a couple rehab appearances and had no issues with the nerve irritation in his right elbow. He'll resume a setup role ahead of Kenley Jansen.

Brian Wilson (elbow) said Sunday that he's ready to rejoin the Dodgers' bullpen. Wilson threw a few simulated games and made a couple rehab appearances for High-A Rancho Cucamonga, and he evidently thinks that's enough. "Those were the five outings I needed," Wilson said. He should be activated from the DL on Tuesday when first eligible.

Brian Wilson (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday. Wilson was just placed on the DL Wednesday, but he threw a bullpen session Friday and is now ready to test things out in a game. As long as the nerve irritation in his elbow doesn't act up again, it sounds like he should be activation in mid-April when eligible.
