Varvaro officially retired from professional baseball Monday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 31-year-old was clicking along with a 2.83 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 28.2 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket, but since he wasn't on the Red Sox's 40-man roster, a promotion wasn't forthcoming. Rather than slumming it in the minors or asking for a release, Varvaro has apparently decided to hang up his spikes. The right-hander has appeared in six big-league seasons as a member of three teams, producing a combined 3.23 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 183.2 innings.

Varvaro was assigned to minor league camp Monday.

EDGE Analysis

After missing most of the 2015 season with a torn flexor tendon, Varvaro will look to get back on track in 21016, though he'll first have to do so at the minor league level. Varvaro figures to open at Triple-A Pawtucket, which would mark his first minor league action since 2012 as a member of the Braves organization.

Varvaro (elbow) elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster Friday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

EDGE Analysis

Varvaro missed the majority of the 2015 season after undergoing season-ending surgery for a torn flexor tendon in his right arm in May. He should be ready for the start of the 2016 season though, and figures to find himself on a major league roster wherever he lands.

Varvaro (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Wednesday.

This was an inevitability with Varvaro undergoing season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm. He now faces a six-month rehabilitation process. Carlos Peguero, was claimed off waivers from Texas and will fill Varvaro's spot on the 40-man roster.

The Cubs returned Varvaro to the Red Sox on Sunday after he was diagnosed with a torn right flexor tendon in his elbow. The Red Sox placed Varvaro on the 15-day DL.

According to the Staten Island Advance, Varvaro will undergo surgery Tuesday to address the tear in his pitching arm, ending his season and voiding the Cubs' waiver claim of the right-hander back on May 3. Varvaro never logged an official appearance with the Cubs or any of their affiliates, so both teams concluded it would be appropriate to return the pitcher to Boston. The reliever is expected to require six months of rehabilitation after having surgery, putting him on track to resume throwing in November.

Varvaro passed through waivers unclaimed and is expected to report to Triple-A Iowa, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Varvaro, who got off to a poor start with the Red Sox, was claimed by the Cubs on May 3, but he did not appear in a game with the team before being DFA'd last week. Passing through waivers unclaimed, Varvaro will head to Iowa in hopes of proving he's worth another call-up at some point.

Varvaro was designated for assignment Wednesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

Varvaro, who was claimed off waivers over the weekend after a dreadful start with the Red Sox, was recalled for Tuesday's game but did not see any action. He'll now head to Triple-A Iowa, where the Cubs hope he'll be able to revert to his 2014 form, when he posted a 2.63 ERA in 54.2 innings for Atlanta.

Varvaro was recalled by the Cubs on Tuesday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Varvaro got off to a poor start with Boston this season, allowing five runs on 14 hits and six walks in 11 innings, leading to his designation for assignment last week. The Cubs took a flier on him and will welcome Varvaro aboard, with Gonzalez Germen optioned in a corresponding move. Varvaro posted a sub-2.83 ERA in three of four seasons from 2011-14, and a sub-1.10 WHIP in two of those years.

Varvaro was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.

The Red Sox dumped Varvaro after he posted an uninspiring 4.09 ERA and 8:6 K:BB ratio over 11 innings, but he could represent an upgrade for the Cubs over their current crop of low-leverage relievers. He'll likely begin his stint with the new organization at Triple-A Iowa, before potentially earning his way to the big-league bullpen if he performs well.

Varvaro was designated for assignment Wednesday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

Varvaro has struggled with the big league team thus far as he sports just an 8:6 K:B ratio and has surrendered four runs in his last three outings, so he'll get sent down to make room for Tom Layne and Dalier Hinojosa. The righty will likely join the Triple-A bullpen and could be in line to rejoin the major league club at some point.
