Fiers (2-1) submitted a dazzling performance Thursday vs. the Cubs, tossing six shutout innings and striking out a career-high 14 batters in the 6-2 victory. He gave up only three hits and walked one. The 14 Ks were the most by a Brewers hurler since Ben Sheets fanned the Braves 18 times in a 2004 game. Though he doesn't possess overpowering stuff, Fiers uses a deceptive delivery to make up for the lack of velocity on his fastball, a pitch that yielded 12 of the 14 strikeouts. His only enemy Thursday was the pitch count, as he might have threatened Kerry Wood's Wrigley Field-record of 20 strikeouts had he not racked up 106 pitches over the first six frames. With Matt Garza expected to miss beyond the minimum 15 days, Fiers should get at least a few more turns in the rotation, and will surely be a hot waiver wire pickup after Thursday's outing.
