Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are discussing a multi-year contract extension with third baseman Matt Carpenter. "This is a dream job for me," Carpenter told Goold. "And if there is something like that for me that could happen with the Cardinals, I would be grateful." The 28-year-old infielder is not even arbitration-eligible until 2015, but it's often wise for teams to lock up players in their pre-arb years. Carpenter finished fourth in the National League MVP voting in 2013 after hitting .318/.392/.481 with a league-leading 55 doubles and 126 runs in 157 games. He'll bat leadoff and play third base in 2014 for St. Louis.
