Royals designated C George Kottaras for assignment. The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Jason Vargas. Kottaras hit just .180/.349/.370 in 126 plate appearances for the Royals in 2013 and was likely going to be non-tendered. He'll look for a backup job elsewhere.
