Padres RHP Tim Stauffer has cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent.
Stauffer underwent successful surgery on his right elbow at the end of August to repair his flexor tendon. He was limited to just one major league start on the season, and would have been in line for around $3.2 million in arbitration had the Padres tendered him a contract.
